Negotiating your salary without feeling awkward
Negotiating salary scares a lot of people. Yet it's a normal part of being hired.
Before the conversation
Research the market: similar positions, region, industry. Decide on three numbers: what you're aiming for, what you'd accept, and the minimum below which you say no.
During the conversation
- Let the employer present their offer first.
- Thank them, then take time to think it over if needed.
- Back up your request with facts: experience, qualifications, responsibilities.
A useful phrase: “I'm very interested in the position. Given my experience, I was hoping for something around this amount. Is that possible?”
Think about the whole package
Salary isn't everything: schedule, vacation, bonuses, training, insurance, remote work. Sometimes the employer has no room on salary, but has some on the rest.
What to avoid
- Lying about your current salary
- Making threats
- Answering a major offer on the spot
